Garden

Moving to Oakland has had many positive effects on our life, bigger house, awesome public school for Lotus, avoidance of the SF Unified Public School lottery nightmare, Nate has a super short commute and we have awesome neighbors. But the biggest factor that keeps me smiling is the fact that our garden gets sun. I mean real direct sunlight, not just the occasional ray that pops out through the fog for a few moments. So this year when I wanted to plant vegetable my gardener didn't just roll her eyes and I got more than moldy plants. Now I can't take total credit for our garden, we do have the most awesome gardeners, but the veggie patch has been Lotus and my special project. Now most nights we eat something we have actually grown, we have chard, squash, tomatoes, peas, broccoli and the corn is just starting to come in.

After watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution I became obsessed to make sure Lotus could identify all the veggies, fruits and herbs in our garden. Poor Lotus. The exchange goes something like this:
Me: Lotus, do you know what this is?
Lotus: (heavy sigh and eye roll) uh, yes that's oregano.

Pretty cool, huh?
