| Walking to school on the first day of First Grade |
Today is Lotus Maria's last day of first grade and it's amazing to think of all that she has done in the past 9 months. Here's just a quick list in no particular order
- Went from acting like she was being boiled alive in hot oil when she had to read, to loving to read.
- Got glasses, which completely helped with the above point.
- Remembered to wear the glasses ALMOST every day.
- Made some new friends, had a few falling outs with old friends, and then made up with old friends.
- Went to Portland for Thanksgiving .
- Got teased.
- Had Christmas dinner with all of her grandparents.
- Took a 24 hour flight to Australia with her 2 year old brother, parents and 90 year old grandfather. Everyone survived.
- Started taking karate
- Saw kangaroo, koalas, penguins and all sort of crazy birds in Australia. Did not see spiders, snakes or anything else crazy that could kill you in Australia.
- Was totally unimpressed with a lunar eclipse.
- Learned how to ride a bike with out training wheels.
- Walked miles everyday in Australia, but still complains about the 2 block walk to and from school.
- Loved art, music and her first grade teacher, hated running laps in P.E.
- Was a ninja for Halloween
- Presented the Guatemalan flag is her class, by herself and in fact ordered me not to come.
Things Nate and I learned about this year.
- That we have to advocate for our child with the school. And be really pleasantly surprised at how well that can go over.
- Though you may want to rip the kids head off that's being mean to your kid, don't. (I didn't, but the thought crossed my mind)
- That bumps in the road in first grade are not the end of the world.
- That walking to school was not always a fun experience when someone complains about every single step.
- Always leave time to not only put on shoes, but to have to find the shoes.
- Traveling across the world with your children is worth every penny and not nearly as stressful as we thought it would be.... thank you Virgin for rear seat entertainment systems!!
- That we are so lucky to have our amazing friends, neighbors and school that support our family and we are thrilled to have our Oakland community.
Happy summer everyone
